Your Secrets to Naturally Glowing Skin & Healthy Hair

Hi! I'm a blogger, entrepreneur and new first-time Mom located in Atlanta, GA. I have always enjoyed researching, writing and sharing my thoughts with others.

Gaining Interest in Natural & Organic Beauty Care

In 2009, I came across a series of articles that outlined the harsh chemicals and harmful effects of ingredients found in our everday health & beauty products.

I discovered that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does NOT have pre-market Approval Authority for cosmetic products. In other words, the FDA cannot control what goes into the making of cosmetics, nor does it have a means to regulate cosmetics production. According to the FDA, it is the responsibility of the cosmetic firm to substantiate their products' safety prior to marketing and production.

Ultimately, this means that your favorite commercial skin care and hair care brands are free to utilize ingredients that may cause harm in even the smallest of amounts.

Discovering Alternatives to Traditional Beauty Products

Once I uncovered the truth about most over-the-counter beauty products, I started to seek out functional alternatives for my everyday beauty needs. I discovered that there is burgeoning market full of "naturally labeled" skin care and hair care goods. Unfortunately, these "naturally-labeled" products fall under the same FDA guidelines as traditional cosmetics, so there is no requirement that the product be 100% organic or natural.

There are beauty products in production that contain 100% organic or natural ingredients, but they can be tricky to find as they are not sold in major chain stores. This created something of a hurdle for me as I transitioned from the chemical-laden goods to those that are chemical-free. I have learned 2 very important things in my search:

1. Always, always, always read the label!
Even if the product is "naturally labeled", always read the label! Chances are, if you cannot identify or pronounce the ingredient, then it is not an organic or natural ingredient.
2. Don't shy away from homemade recipes!
Some of the most effective ingredients found in beauty products, can be found in the home. Find a homemade beauty recipe, or feel free to experiment with your favorite organic or natural ingredients.
